Dr Dominic Deane is an interdisciplinary media artist with over 18 years of practical and academic experience, working both in the education, multimedia and film/music industry. He previously graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2004 with a BSc in Multimedia Technology and further completed a MSc in Creative Technology in 2005. He also gained his PGCE In-Service Certificate in Education at the University of Huddersfield in 2008, and more recently, he was awarded his PhD in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Manchester in 2023. His doctoral thesis is entitled Behind the Scenes: Mapping Live Music Scenes in Leeds, 2000-2016 and investigated the social and cultural examination of local music-making in Leeds from the DIY and Indie music scenes. Over the course of his PhD, he presented at various international music conferences in Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Porto and Canberra. His work has been published in Routledge, Intellect and Riffs Journal. He has previously taught degree and masters level courses at the University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett University, Leeds City College and Spirit Studios in Manchester.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Dominic previously worked for several media companies in the Yorkshire area.  He is also a musician who has been recording, performing and touring around the world. He also performed in several bands, and previously promoted gigs and ran a DIY label in the Leeds and Bradford area. His professional work has been featured on the BBC, Channel 4, E4, The Guardian, The Independent, Music Venue Trust, and Electronic Sounds magazine.

Dominic’s film credits as a music composer, sound designer and sound mixer included the Leeds International film festival, London Fringe, and The Exeter Phoenix.
